Fuel Dump

Anyone notice their 500 peeing out about 25cc of fuel when they turn it off after a ride? Mine is pretty consistent, but I only see it when I end my ride on my asphalt driveway. If I stop on concrete, it evaporates so quickly it's unnoticeable.

It comes from an overflow drain hose that hangs below the chassis behind the engine. The hose looks like it comes from the fuel pump at the back underside of the tank. My guess is that the fuel rail pressure is being relieved during shutdown.

Wait until the California Air Resources Board finds out....

Heat from the Engine expands the Gas in the tank.

So, we're talking overflow? Have you experienced it? I had 6 miles on a fill-up, so you may be on the money!

I have had it only when I fill the tank to the filler lip. Now I stop with a small gap below the filler cap and no more leak. Tucsonmax1 has nailed it on the head.

When I fill mine up, I fill it just to the Nozzle Holder inside the Fill opening. Ride home. And leave it sit in the driveway for at least 1/2 hour. To allow the exhaust to cool. As I park next to a wall. Inches from the wall. So close my foot peg almost touches. And sometimes see a few drops under the Overflow Tube. Especially on the HOT days.

While we are on the subject of Fuel, Do you put any additive in? Every Fill-Up get 1 oz. Lucas Ethanol Guard. Helps stabilize the fuel. I may not ride it again for a few days. But if I am out on the road with the Guys, Usually don't. Only when I am finished for the day.

Non-ethanol only for mine. $3 a fill difference. 66 mpg with Nightstick (2 extra discs), K&N and FP3. I attribute the mileage to where I ride -- I can do 100 mile rides with less than 10 stop signs and fewer than 50 cars.

Fuel Expansion

Fuel expansion is a pretty common event. It doesn't even need engine heat. Simply pump gas out of a cool, underground tank into the fuel tank of any vehicle on a warm day and it will heat up and expand due to ambient temperature. I've seen it in cars but hadn't really though about it on the bike.

Normally I don't fill the bike and head directly to the barn. No real thought goes into that, just that I live in a small town and it's less expensive to fill up out of town.
