1000 Mile Service, Dealer or Not

Okay folks how many of you used the dealer for your 1000 mile service, and how much did you pay? I'm a newbie to Harley Davidson so I'm just learning the ins and outs. I can manage my own oil changes but some of the other stuff like belt tension and valve lash are over me. Does that stuff really need to be done? I don't mine paying for it, but how do you know they actually check all that stuff?

i have my maintenance done with the dealership until the vehicle's factory warranty is up. just make sure whatever work is done is clearly noted on the receipt; and hold on to those service receipts for proof that you kept to the maintenance schedule

Got the 1000 mile done at the dealership cost was $200.When she hit 5000 miles I did it all myself and will do it every time from now on.
Don't like the idea of someone else working on her. And yes you want to check belt tension especially if you like to go through the gears quickly
as for valve lash its like every 15000 miles after the 1000 mile check. Almost all of it is easy checks anyway.

I had mine done at the dealer as the costs were built into the two year maintenance plan that came with the motorcycle.

I do my own work. Only reason I went to the dealer for the 1k was, I needed other things fixed as well. And for them to evaluate the performance of the K&N AF and FB Muffler.

Then I got off cheap as I had already most of the work.

Update: Changed my own oil and filter; dealer cut me a deal and only charged me $100 for the 1K service. Gave me a great feeling for the dealer since they originally quote me a $275 fee.

First service!

I think it depends on the dealership. I also am new to Harley and to bike riding. The dealership that I purchased my bike from quoted me $450 for the first service. I called down to the dealership down the rode who only quoted me $250. I think I will pay the $250 for the first service just because you never know what may be loose etc on a new bike. Most people I have talked to said the first service is worth what you pay. But I would definitely shop around. Obviously dealerships charge different prices.

1000 Mile Service, Dealer or Not

I bought a copy of the service manual for down the road, but plan on following the maintenance schedule at the dealership until the warranty is out. I paid $210 out the door. Some have gotten it cheaper or free, but I've seen some pay much worse so I feel okay going back to the dealership I bought my bike from. Hope everything checks out!

$160 for the 5K? I am seeing service menus of 220-350 in my area.
