Even though the manual says just raise the tank...

When doing a valve adjustment, it is far easier to replace the valve covers and not blow a gasket if you just remove the tank. Yes, you'll get a bath in gas, but oh so much more room to work.

For the record, you can still do the rear just fine without removing the tank, but the front runs you the risk of getting the gasket twisted when you replace the valve cover. There's just not enough clearance there without phoning a friend to jerk on the tank so the crossover hose can get out of your way.

I found this out the hard way (hence the photo of the leaky bike). I was able to save the gasket, though which is a plus, and now I have a reason to wash it for the first time in like 18k miles.
