Gas light

Hey all...I went for a ride yesterday and the gas light came on at around 96 miles, this was after a mix of city and highway riding, not always in a very conservative manner. 😜 My question is this, I ended up putting in 2.12 gallons after 110 mls and it was filled with very little room left. The numbers mean there was 1.38 gallons left in the tank prior to filling up...why does the light come on so early? Please let me know your thoughts.

PS: When I first bought my bike (XG750) the dude at dealership told me to get on the highway with a friend and some xtra gass and ride it till it dies to get a good idea of the range. Think I'm going to that soon...

Your range will very depend on how you are riding, wind traffic. the light is just a warning. Best to use the trip meter once you have a good idea. Running out of gas is no fun.
I miss the old reserve. Run until it stutters then flip it to reserve head for gas station. But thing of the past.

Running a fuel-injected engine dry is not a great idea.

The gas light is on the speedometer, in the lower right corner. It's not very big and not overly visible, it's a small orange light. It is supposed to come on when there's 0.8 gallons left.

On a 750, if you're driving like an absolute granny on the highway, you should be able to get at least 140 miles before the light comes on. If you're driving like The Fast and the Furious in the city, you'd probably only get around 100 miles before the light comes on. That of course presupposes a full tank, all the way up to the brim.

The best gas mileage comes at a continuous pace, on flat roads, at about 40 to 45 mph. The worst gas mileage comes from idling, where you're literally getting 0 mpg.

On my 15 model, Its partially obscured by the Trip button. When I am sitting on it, Due to the Angle, I can only see the upper half. Once I had 197 Miles on a Tankful. Took 3.4 Gallons to fill.

When the fuel light comes on solid my xg750 will usually drink 2.7-2.9 gallons. It will start flickering a little bit before that.

I did some riding on the freeway with lots of wind, my immense bulk, and some wide open throttle. That trip the light came on solid at 100 miles. Usually I get around 125 miles before I start thinking about filling up.
