Street 500 coolant color

Hi all,

My coolant was a bit low so I bought the recommended Harley coolant, but have a question.

Can anyone explain why the stuff in the bike appears red, but the Harley stuff in the bottle is orange?

Is there more than one type of the HD long life antifreeze?

Harley use only one specification of anti freeze for their bikes, however they may well use more than one company to supply it to them which would explain the variation of colour in your anti freeze.

In my opinion:
I should not worry about it - Different manufacturers use different colours or shades of the same colour, As long as the antifreeze you are using is the correct spec it is fine to mix different colours.

The colour of the antifreeze in your bike will also differ from bike to bike depending on the strength of the mixture you have. Colder climates obviously require stronger mixes whereas in hot countries the mix can be watered down more.

If it was sold to you by a Harley Dealer you likely paid a little more than you would for another brand but you can bet it is more than adequate for the job - if you are unhappy why not ask them - I am certain they will confirm there is no problem.

In normal use engine coolant is green (for ethylene glycol) or orange (for Dexcool)
A rusty color indicates that the rust inhibitor in the coolant has broken down and it can no longer control rust and scale buildup. A milky color indicates the presence of oil in the system

For peace of mind you can buy a tool quite cheaply that shows you the properties of your antifreeze - failing that it is a two minute test that any garage / bike shop will happily carry out.

I contacted Prestone back awhile ago. They responded with a recommendation to use DexCool. If you read the bottles, They look the same. Borite Free, Nitrite Free, etc.

Just use what you get from HD you can't go wrong. Just something to think about. My 2016,RGU and the 2017 RGU the 2015 Street I still have combined have only used 2 OZ of coolant. Small bottle of it from HD has plenty left.
Back up a few years it used to be green was the old stuff. red or redish boron, orange was a newer more environment friendly and it was a "life time" coolant . Where as the Green stuff need to be changed more often. That old rules is not always the case anymore. . You can tell much by looking at it .
