Harley Recalls 44k Street 500/750

Hi all,

I was on the phone with a Revzilla rep and he mentioned that his Street 750 was recalled recently due to front brake failure. After some digging online I found that around 44k Street models are being recalled (Model Years 2016 - 2019). I phoned HD directly with my VIN and they told me that my bike is not a part of the recall due to it being manufactured right before the 2016 time frame.

The HD rep said "this is only really affecting people who live in coastal areas where rust can occur". This didn't make me feel any better since I live in a coastal area with significant rust on parts of my bike already.

Just throwing this out there in case you have not seen/heard about the recall. Also, can anyone recommend a good aftermarket front caliper lol.

Here in the Uk my bike has just appeared on the HD recall site - I checked with the dealer and they say parts will not be available until the end of March but it does need to be done

Here is the info on the recall:

Last updated Feb 06, 2019
The brake calipers (P/Ns 41300158, 41300159 & 41300190) may develop corrosion in the caliper bore area if subjected to a corrosive external environment over time. This corrosion could lead to the pistons dragging in the caliper bore.

Model
2018 Street 750

Safety risk
If this condition remains undetected it could result in increased brake drag, possibly resulting in a crash.

Remedy
Owners of affected motorcycles will be asked to arrange service with an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer, who will confirm that the motorcycle is covered by this recall. If covered, the dealer will install new front and rear brake calipers from the recall kits, P/N 91500097 or P/N 91500098, depending on the model of motorcycle. This service will be provided at no charge to the customer. The “Harley-Davidson Motor Company General Reimbursement Program for Pre-Notification Remedies” dated December 2018 will apply to this recall.

We strongly urge you to take your motorcycle to your dealer to have the appropriate service performed as soon as possible. Should you choose to ride your motorcycle prior to this service, we urge you to be aware of this condition. Some product campaigns may have expired and you may have to pay for the service. Please see your local Harley-Davidson dealer for further details

I don't know which is Worse? The 15 750 that couldn't stay out of the shop. Or the 16 and Newer. At Least my Custom 1200 has been Reliable. True I changed the Pads to cure a Brake Squeak. Mostly Maintenance items and Upgrades. 3600 Miles. Scary on a wet road.

Well I must admit mine has not been used as much as I had hoped - mainly due to me being unwell and nothing to do with the bike, but overall mine has been ok.

I have been messing with it a bit and making sure it is spotlessly clean ready for the Summer.
I have put a seat cover on (perhaps not to everyone's taste lol) and additional lights - all quite inexpensive, picture attached if anyone is interested.
My understanding of this recall is that it is due to the fact that the brakes MAY rust and cause an issue, more likely to happen in 'salty environments'? I live 100 miles from the sea so I reckon I should be ok lol - I guess that in reality this was common problem in the old days on most bikes anyway and it could be that HD are being over cautious.
Yep, recall letters should have been sent out I think but that will probably happen closer to the date that the parts are available? It may have been a good idea though if HD had actually advised the owners of the issue so that those more likely to be affected could have been aware of this, as it is we have had to find this info by sharing it with each other and scouring web pages to see what the issue is and how it will be remedied.

Been lots about this brake recall and seems like the recall repair subject to a delay in replacement parts (March). I have a question for those who might know.... Does this recall apply to the 2018 Street Rod XG750A. I see no mention of this bike which has twin front rotors so perhaps they have change the braking system resolving the issues that effect the Street model.

Thanks Rossco 1664 @ Tucsonmax1. I will advise HD dealer on my next service due in 4000K so it will be past the March delay date. It will be interesting to see if they want to own it.
