K&N Recall

Hi all I was looking online. And saw this. Don't know how old it is? Good thing I switched to the K&N 303s.

Thanks. I'm going out to check mine now... Well, I checked mine and the stamped on number is mostly gone, so I have no idea if it's one of the recalled filters or not. I'm just going to keep an eye on it, since the potential problem is a leak from the 'nut'.

The KN-303 is not listed for HD motorcycles, but it looks the same as the KN-204 except for height. There's plenty of room for a taller filter and more filter area and oil are always welcome. Are they working out for you, Tucsonmax1?

I have used the 303. Its the Same Filter and Valve. Just slightly longer. Another 1/2" or so. I have a 204. New in the box. Don't see a Date Code stamped on it. Sent K&N an e-mail. Have yet to hear from them.
When I change my Oil and Filter, I like to Prime it. Turn the Run Switch to Off. Crank for a few seconds. I'll do it twice. Then start the engine. This way some of the oil gets pumped into the filter. Shortens the Dry Start.

Dry starts and cold starts are where most of the wear occurs. Gentle treatment of a cold engine does make a difference. I remember Husqvarna doing a test on powerheads for their tools years ago. A 3-5 minute idling warmup doubled the life of the powerhead. I have 3 miles of gentle down hill from my house to get things moving on a cold engine. It's almost ideal.

There's been more than a few reports of this type of K&N filter failing where the 'nut' is spot welded to the filter body. In some cases the weld has caused microscopic holes in the filter body and when the filter is under pressure the nut and filter body have parted company causing in at least one case catastrophic damage to a Triumph's engine. K&N had the decency to cough up the readies for a total rebuild though the chap couldn't say a lot about the financial side of the compensation as K&N made confidentiality part of the settlement.

Personally I always stick with Harley's own oil filter, not because I think they're particularly superior, just if it does fail they would be hard pushed to blame the quality of their own brand filter.

The Harley filter is made in India by an Austrian company called Mahle.
