I have definitely had times when I'm shifting from first to second that I roll on the throttle and find I'm in neutral. Also, sometimes the N indicator shows and sometimes it doesn't. I'm not sure if it happens any particular time, just seems random to me. I figured I'd ask the dealer to check it out when it goes in for the 1K check.

I find boots sometimes give me shift issues more than shoes I dont know why, my fellow techs always tell me shift it like you mean it, these shifters dont like you not fully release them... gonna see if I have any issues tomorrow, guess the added height of the boot causes you not to fully release when shifting, otherwise?

luckily i hadn't experienced this problem.
i see there is a linkage adjustment on the shifter shaft.
hadn't really looked up close but there may be a way to raise the shift lever for those that ride with thick toed boots.

personally i wished the bikes shift pattern was 6 up ...
i never have liked the one down and the long way up to 2nd pattern.
fast take offs would be so much faster and easier with an all up pattern.

when i was a kid my cl70 Honda scrambler was 4 up.
that was the only bike i ever ridden with that pattern.

maybe is you put full synthetic oil in it, like amsoil it will help this problem, i dunno.

Revzilla's review stated how badly it was designed with the linkage and how you get false shifts.

I've had it not shift when I attempted to shift before making me shift twice for one gear, but I've never accidentally hit neutral or any gear I wasn't aiming for. Also have ease with finding neutral when I need to, even stopped.

I have been seeing the same thing. When I am trying to shift quickly it gets stuck in neutral and a couple of times would not go into second. I had to put it back into first before it would go to second. This maybe me but it happens so often that I am mainly starting in second now to just skip the transition.

on occasion i'll think i shifted into 2nd gear and realize that i am in neutral, but afterward i can shift to 2nd without issue.

i have more of the problem of not being able to shift into neutral when i intend to (makes me look silly at the traffic light, when i want to give my left hand a break)

I just picked mine up today. Brand new 750. On the ride home it got stuck in second and wouldn't shift up or down. Clutch, no clutch, half clutch, on gas, off gas, anything. Luckily traffic cooperated with second gear speeds for a good 2 miles and somehow it finally shifted up. After that I rode it home, put on new exhaust, intake, and FP3, and after it got hot the second time there were no issues.... Very Weird ride home on a new bike though.

Sometimes I mess up. And go into N instead of 2nd. Usually because I am not paying attention to the shift. Sometimes I do a Rolling Stop. Go from2nd to N. Tap down lightly. Then coast to the red light. I do it pulling into the driveway. 1st to N while coasting.

I just bought a Street 750 on June 11th and the same day I brought it back for the same issue of not up shifting to second once it warmed up. The dealer kept telling me that it was my boots, or the way I was shifting. I had it for a few more days and almost got into a few accidents taking off from stop signs and lights when the bike wouldn't up shift to 2nd. On the evening of June 12th coming from a stop light I up shifted 8 times until it rolled to a near stop and the truck behind me almost rear ended me. I brought it back, and the dealer was still leery that it was the bike and not me. I insisted they take it on a long ride, then I went home and called big Harley and complained and opened a case on it. Big Harley called the dealer and then the dealer took it on a long ride. No updates from anyone, so I called back two days later and they had my transmission apart because they finally replicated the problem once it got hot. Yesterday, I went to the dealer insisting they give me a loaner bike and they admitted that they have no clue why its doing it and there waiting on big Harley to send a tech and to give them another freaking week! So I just called big Harley and complained to a manager about why they haven't sent a tech like the dealer requested. I told them that no one is updating me on whats actually wrong, and if they don't have a solution I am asking for a full refund and returning this bike this week.

Bottom line, this bike, as of this post, has been in service longer then its been in my driveway over this issue........
Did they fix it? I would like to know, since I have the same issue. It is happening more after the 1000 mile service.

This is something that has happened to me as well. On some days it happens 5-6 times in a ride, on others not at all! I've tried being both really firm with the shifter and more normal/soft, and it doesn't seem to have any correlation with the slip to neutral. I've seen a few members mention not letting it fully sit back in it's default position (like my foot is causing it to remain slightly raised) so I will keep that in mind next time I take it for a ride and see if that's what I'm accidentally doing.

Did anyone Check their Clutch Cable Adjustment? I had to Adjust mine at around 670 Miles. Think mine may have moved, Need to check it again. And I did hand tighten the Locknut.

Just had my 1k and I asked them to take a look at it. They definitely changed the clutch because it felt really different afterwards. They also said they could not recreate it but adjusted the clutch just as part of the 1k activities. I no longer got the same behavior as before, for the first week of riding, but it then just happened to me again yesterday. I actually had it in 2nd and it slipped into Neutral as I released the clutch. I then kept it up while starting the release and it worked fine. Not sure what the real problem is now. But it is not happening every ride as it was prior to the 1k service.

Shifting from 1st to 2nd ending up in neutral is solved on my xg750 by the dealer.
They removed the clutch, found the shifter pawl (shifter shaft assembly) to be way off center and adjusted it to be centered.
See attachments.

History: I never had a problem like this until the 1000 mile service. Of course once in a great while it would happen, caused by my inexperience. After the 1000 mile service, on a 17 miles ride with a lot of stop signs, it would happen frequently ( approximately 5 times out of 20 stops). One time, I could not get it to second gear trying 2 or 3 times, until having to go down again to first gear, then I could go up to second. That time someone almost ran into me from behind. I brought it to the dealer, they could not recreate it and they adjusted the shifter and such just to make sure everything is perfect. On the way home, again, the same issue. About 5 out of 20 stops 1st to 2nd gear ended up in neutral. Brought it back to the dealer. They had used the synthetic 20w-50 oil at the 1000 mile service. Since that was the main difference, I asked them to replace it with the normal oil which was used originally by HD. Since this is California, the dealer had only 20W-50 oil and no one knew if HD used 10W-40 originally, since it was produced in November. They replaced it with the 20W-50 oil. That made some difference, now it failed approximately 1 out of 15 stops. Second time it failed, my son was riding and almost got hit from behind since he had to shift back to 1st to be able to go to second gear. We turned around, brought it back to the dealer, they took it seriously, found the problem and it appears to be fixed.
This problem was worse than the original lag and leap problem, because it could happen at any time and usually happened at the worst possible time.
So, some of the 1st to 2nd shifting ending up in neutral may be inexperience or footwear, but if it is happening frequently and sometimes you need to shift back to first, it could be caused by misalignment of the shifter pawl and aggravated by oil viscosity.
Anyway, I sold my xg750 to my son and bought myself a 2016 Dyna Low Rider. This way, when I get too old to handle the Low Rider, I will trade with him.

Gear 'knocking' sound when moving between gears

I've had a problem with my Street 750 where there's always a quite loud 'thunk' sound that comes when I shift into 1st gear even after letting the bike idle for a while. Same thing happens from moving between gears - up or down - though I make sure to do so in the correct ranges. Is this normal for the bike or is it time to go back to the shop?
