The seat strap that comes stock on the motorcycle is the "handhold" referred to in the law. What the law apparently ends is the ability of a passenger to depend solely upon holding on to the rider although they can still do that so long as the seat strap is still on the motorcycle seat.

It is a nothing new law... passed because the family of a chick killed on a motorbike that was crashed in a single vehicle accident believes there must be a law that would have saved their daughter.

I am sorry for the loss of their daughter, but no law will protect against stupidity.

The one thing that came out of it was the new rule on education about passengers. I am all for more education so that was basically what it got water down to before it finally passed.

I sent a bunch of money to AMA-PAC to fight this during the 2011 and 2012 session to make sure the original idea of sportbikes not allowed to carry passengers was killed. Then again in the reincarnation of it where you had to drive for two years prior to carrying a passenger.

Knee jerk reaction to an emotional trauma with a legislator to chicken to say the feds already require a hand hold strap for years.
It is also my understanding that federal law already requires handholds and footpegs for motorcycles designed to carry a passenger and that all manufactures provide both if the seat is designed for a passenger.

All Street 500/750's come from Harley-Davidson with both the seat strap (handhold) and passenger foot pegs.
Thanks guys. Glad I have a few seasoned riders to ask questions.
