Just got my Street 500 on Monday. Love the bike (It's my first) Love riding. I was worried yesterday, because I had to drive my kids to school, that I wasn't going to get a chance to ride her. But then I remembered that the gas light came on the day before so I took her out just to gas up. What do you guys do with the gas cap when you're filling up?

Worried about scratches laying it on the tank.
Worried about the leather laying it on the seat.
Worried about dirt and junk laying it on the ground.

Do you just hold it?

I toss it up on the gas pump while I fuel.

I set my gloves on the seat, put the gas cap on top of the gloves.

I do that as well. I also grab some of the paper towels just in case I puke gasoline all over the tank which happens more often than I'd like.

The configuration of the hole in the tank tends to make that happen far too often IMO. If I was keeping the stock tank I'd probably cut that plate out of the tank eventually just to get rid of it. Why they like to restrict the opening to the tank confuses me. Combined with the vapor collector on the gas nozzle they make fueling a motorcycle a pain in the butt.

I put the cap on the top of the gas pump. Hadn't considered the possibility of scratches... until now. Thanks a lot!

Here's a trick for you. You pull in to a parking lot, pull a ticket and on the ticket it says: "place face up on dash." Now what? Easy solution: put a roll of scotch tape in your saddlebag & tape the ticket to your speedo/tach.

I don't have saddle bags and ignore "rules" when it comes to parking anyway. It is, after all, a Harley and Harley's are exempt from many rules. LOL

I don't yet have my Street and I'm still riding and learning on my little Rebel 250

I went through the same conundrum with a Rebel. I discovered that the keys make a great cap retainer and simply flip the cap over the handle bars. My next test drive, I will see if it works on the 750 as well

I don't see why it wouldn't.

Thanks
Joe

While I've never owned or rode a Rebel 250 (I've owned other 250's) I've talked to those that have and it is an excellent small motorcycle. It is especially good for those learning to ride motorcycles IMO (not disparaging those that might choose a Street to learn on instead).

I pull a paper towel and lay the top on it, on the concrete slab at the bottom of the gas plump, I dont worry about forgeting it because I dont disengage the key from the cap, so I can not drive away without the key, this way I can pay attention in not overflowing the gas instead of worrying about the cap rolling off..
