There is a plug in the stem where you are looking at.
I was thinking the SAME thing; using the ram mount and ball but not the actual phone holder because the Pads hit the phone EXACTLY where the buttons are on an iPhone. However, because that opening is NOT open, I figured on another route.
I just grabbed a zip pouch with magnets in it and put the phone in that. It attaches to the tank and then I connect my headphones (Bluetooth or regular) and get GPS data that way. That's the only reason I keep the phone nearby at all. Most times the phone is away as I don't need to SEE the device display; I get all the audible alerts in my ear perfectly.
Works best for me.
