Hi there,

My bike has been running fine, except for the rear brakes which makes a noticable squeeking noise on slow braking or start/stop traffic. I have some pictures attached which show what seems to be rust on the callipers, not sure if this is normal or not.

I have blown compressed air around it to get rid of any dirt, but I am not to mechanically savvy so I have avoided removing the clamps myself.

It is due for a service in a month but is this something I should be worried about, or something I can try fix myself?

Street 500, 2017.

Need a picture of the Brake Pads. Both inside and outside.

Can't really see how worn the pads are from your pictures. If you look at the pads from directly behind you'll see the actual braking pad material bonded onto the (rusty) carrier plates. If there is material there and you're not confident removing the pads and cleaning them, leave it for your dealer. If there is no brake pad material left and the metal carrier plates are contacting the disc, stop riding and get them replaced asp.

If all this sounds to confusing, just post a couple more pictures taken from directly behind the caliper!

I had a Squeaking brake long time ago on a Honda Silver Wing. Sanded the rotor with some 1000 Grit to break the Glaze.

Minimum Thickness for Brake pads on the Street is 0.2 MM or .008 inches. If they are not worn The noise is often cause by dust/dirt ect embedded in the pads or rotor. Often sprying down with a mild brake clean will stop it.

You've got plenty of meat left on your pads, so embedded dirt on the pad surface or corrosion between the caliper piston and the rear of the brake pad or possibly both are the likely causes.

You can buy brake cleaner in aerosol form which you spray onto the calipers, which is worth a try, or as you say watch a You Tube video for removing and cleaning the caliper and pads. It really is a very easy task to perform.

If you do decide to strip and clean the caliper and pads, please remember the golden rule, with the caliper off DO NOT operate the brake lever, otherwise you may end up ejecting the Pistons from the caliper which will result in having to rebuild it and bleed the system, or if you have ABS, a visit to the dealer to rebuild and bleed!

The pads look about 50%. If you take the Caliper Apart, Don't forget to Grease the Caliper Slides. The Muffler is close and the Grease Dries out from the heat. The 2010 Yamaha Majesty had to be greased every few thousand miles. And I used the Permatex Synthetic brake grease.

I had the same problem with a when new 2016 XG500 I told the service tech and boom it was gone when I got the bike back I check the receipt and no mention. My guess is that the pad was not greased (the back of the pad NOT the front.) I've had a similar issue with a car.
