I think the Bolt was aimed directly at the Sportster, I mean look at it, it is a copy, and a poor one at that.
I respect all bikes, regardless of manufacturers, so I am not dissing Yamaha as a hater. There are three things on the Bolt that totally turn me off on it:
1-Digital instrumentation. Yamaha copied the classic, traditional lines of the Sportster, and put a totally out of place digital display on it instead of the traditional style speedometer.
2-The front frame down tubes are bent outward to miss the front exhaust pipe. Looks like a total afterthought, and that the frame and engine were not designed to go together.
3-Those god-awful gas tank flanges found on most metric bikes look so cheezy and cheap.

On a side note, I was looking at the used inventory at my local HD stealer a while back. There were some Hondas, Yamahas, and Victories sitting there. The one thing that really came to my attention was the paint quality. The Harleys were smooth as glass but all the other brands were orange peely and slightly duller looking.

Back to the original post, I would choose the Street over the Bolt even if it were more money. Much better looking bike.

I took a good look at the Bolt, since there are starting to be a few reasonably priced used 2014s here and there. Anyway, my observations:

1. Despite the lower listed seat height, the Bolt is less short-rider friendly than the Street.The belt housing on the left and the exhaust on the right impede the reach to the ground.
2. Personally I come from a sport bike background and I don't mind the digital instruments, but they're mounted at an angle that makes them hard to see in sunlight.
3. Big, cheap-looking plastic airbox is both a bad styling move and an ergonomic problem. I'm not sure what Yamaha was even thinking with that. But:
4. There seems to be a lot more aftermarket support for the Bolt, both from Yamaha and other major manufacturers.

I knew at that point I wasn't going to buy, so I didn't ask for a test ride.

The comparison is really simple.

Bolt - Built by Yamaha
Street - Built by Harley-Davidson

Make your pick based just on that criteria.

WEll I actually Bought a Bolt today and I must say I am very impressed. The 950 has plenty of punch and the brakes are far superior to the 750. The riding position is better and the transmission is spot-on with the shifts. Bam you've just smacked it dead center into the appropriate gear and it is solidly planted. NO squishy or loose shifting, when you hit a gear it is rock solid and it stays there. I'll be putting her through her paces tomorrow and let you know the out come. I can tell you this already, Natalie (750) will flat kick Stella's (StarBolt)azz in a quarter mile run. She may be fast also but Natalie is just plain ole quiuck. Quick and fast is hard to beat, :)

I test rode one about a year ago, and liked it.

Felt a lot like my old 1994 Virago, just a lot more refined

Would have got one at the time, but they knocked my finance application back.

love the Street, don't get me wrong

I have ridden the Bolt for about 5 days now and made the following observations.
The Bolt has plenty of get-up-and-go, great shifting and excellent brakes. I love the throaty sound of the 950 engine and the handling is very good at all speeds. I can find no fault with her at this point other than the lack of reading the speedometer on sunny days, (however there is a mounting modification plate for that).
The riding position is very good and the lighting for night riding is as good as any. All the controls are well placed and easily manipulated.
I like my Bolt..... However, my Street 750 is more fun to ride ! :)

Now I have 3 machines,....Yamaha Bolt R spec,....Harley 750 Street,.... Royal Enfield Bullet 500 C Military Green.

My opinion of the quality of the ride:

Yamaha Bolt = Dodge Ram
Street 750 = Corvette
Royal Enfield = John Deere tractor

You must remember the Street is better because it is American made.

It is not another metric bike from overseas with all the headaches and problems that go along with owning a foreign machine.
