hi guys , just finished breaking in my engine , was going to order some 20w 50 , i am wondering whats already in the engine ? mineral or synthetic , im intending to stick with whatever is the factory type . anybody know ?

This will start a Debate. Factory Oil is the HD360. My own 750, I use Valvoline 20/50 Full Synthetic oil.


Filter? Currently using a HiFlo HF204RC. Next change I am using a Bosch Distance Plus D3300

My dealer implied that there was no option with this bike, it MUST have synthetic. I don't see that indicated in the owner's manual. But really, it comes down to if you like the bike/might keep it a long time or not. If you don't like it, and don't plan to keep it long, any oil will do. If you like it, and especially if you plan to keep it a long time, clearly you'd want to run good synthetic oil. I plan to put Amsoil in mine at the next change.

Good choice Amsoil, I started using in my 750 at 1000 miles. Shifting became easier and I could find neutral. I'm sticking with V-Twin 20-50w in mine, I feel it is worth the extra bucks.

Full synthetic is the only oil I run in my HDs

Full synthetic is the way to go. I used 20W50 HD Screaming Eagle full synthetic at my first 500 mile oil change on my new street 750. The engine ran smoother right after this 1st oil change. In my 2006 Heritage Softail I have used Mobil 1, Valvoline, and HD Screaming Eagle all full synthetic.

The real debate is there a difference between specified motorcycle oil and either automotive or high performance automotive oils? I beg to differ and I think it is a marketing scam and gimmick to slap a label and charge you more for a name, especially for full synthetic oils... Conventional and synthetic blends are a toss up, but I don't use them, well, conventional only when breaking in a motor is when I use it, then after a few hundred I change it.

When I hit the 500 mile marker, I changed my oil to what I always do, Lucas full synthetic oil 20w-50 and Lucas full synthetic oil stabilizer... Or Amsoil, depending on the budget or build. I used to use Royal Purple with their Synerlec I think, and it was good and performed at high heat but jumped up wayyyyy too much in price... I use Lucas 20w-50 in my DSM (10 sec all wheel drive turbocharger) and in my old GTP (12 Sec front wheel drive supercharger). On high performance vehicles, especially those that use the oil crankcase to power their turbo or super, best quality oil is needed, on a separate system like the M90 Eaton blower, that supercharger has it's own internal oil crankcase, so that also has intervals that needs to be replaced and checked.

Honestly, coming from the standpoint of where I am now, full synthetic is all I trust and bet my $$$ on, for the times of people forgetting to change their oil, conventional oils would destroy engines in no time with sludge and turn to gel (I have taken apart engines like that), so full synthetic is also a little more forgiving and runs a crap ton cleaner than conventional.

I haven't completed my break in yet, but I plan to use AMSOIL or some other similar synthetic. For any vehicle you like and plan to keep, like others said, use full synthetic. Anyone know who makes the HD branded oil?

If I remember correctly, The Manual states you can use Synthetic 20/50. But Does Not say anything about Synthetic 10/40. Only Conventional 10/40. Maybe the Synthetic 10/40 is too slippery? And get sucked down with the Blow By gases.


I am running the Bosch Distance Plus D3300on my 750. Its been on for about 1k Miles. Only cost about $10 at Walmart.com. Factory filter is $8 or so.

Whatever Oil you use, Make Sure it is Wet Clutch Safe. MA or MA2. The Friction Modifiers in Automotive Oil will mess up the Clutch. Which works off of Friction. Unfortunately, Harley doesn't mention that. Only to use their Oil. They don't even mention what SAE Grade, SJ, SL, SM?? I saw one oil listed as SN. Can't remember the brand.

It says to use Diesel oil if you can't buy Harley oil. So rather than SJ, SL, etc, it would be CI, CJ, etc.. Very strange that they suggest diesel oil. As I'm just about to head into the winter months, I'm switching to 10W-40 rather than 20W-50, as indicated by the chart in the owners manual. Looks like they also recommend reducing the oil change intervals to 1500 miles, as my primary use in the winter is commuting, and it's 6 miles each way.

ive used mobil one in all my c.ages since it first came out and ill swear by it as for my street, im only gonna run the full synthetic 20/50 all the vehicles ive had the motor and tranny lasted the longest , so im gonna stick with synthia

From what I have read it is made by Citgo.

Discussion's on oil remind me of the old Western song - "I like Bud, and you like Coors, and that's why we fight." I'm really surprised that this forum is handling it in a gentlemanly fashion.

As long as my scoot's under warranty by H-D, I'll use what H-D recommends. As soon as the warranty expires, I'll use whatever I feel like at the time. If I pick the wrong oil, then it's my problem to rebuild the mill. There's a lot of options and I keep reminding myself that no one way is the "perfect" way.
