Hi Fellow HOGs,

I have noticed that My 750 does not give a smooth throttle response while in first and second gear. The first gear seems ridiculously short, and have noticed that at time while in second gear , the bike has difficulty in pulling from 20 kmph to 40kmph and it seems the speedometer needle gets stuck somewhere near 40kmph. Have any of ya'll faced such an issue? I had previously adjusted the clutch cable as the clutch seemed too hard and my hand would get sore within 20 min of riding.. But im doubting whether this would be the cause of the issue. Pls advise. :(

No such issues faced here, but I would suggest go back to the dealer for a solution. You haven't stated whether this phenomenon is prevalent in other gears also, so it needs a check by an expert. Could be a simple thing as an incorrect spark plug gap or something else altogether.

Take it to the dealer. The fix should be covered by the warranty.

Thanks Flamegirl,

And no the issue isnt there in any other gear except second. Anyways ill talk to my dealer. Thanks again.:)

Engine performance and throttle really don't have anything to do with what gear you're end. The Streets have a lot of power and in first and second gear they can be jerky if you're not very smooth on the throttle application. My Street 750 was a lot more sensitive in the low gears when compared to my Sportster that is a much heavier motorcycle. If you're only having a problem in the low gears I don't believe it's actually a throttle issue but instead a sensitivity issue because any change in throttle is felt more in lower gears.

OK i guess i should put it like the engine feels more refined from the 3rd gear up. I'm feeling some roughness in the first and second gears. And as i said it also feels like in second gear i cant go beyond 40kmph, Is this normal? I am also suspecting that maybe there might be a clutch plate drag as i had loosened the clutch cable, as the clutch lever was unusually hard to pull.

Hey Vicky, sounds just like the issue I was having with my 500. It's still at the dealership. They told me the spark plugs were a bit dirty. I had a whole 160 miles on it. I haven't gotten it back yet though. I'm interested in what your dealer tells You.

"Refined" is a bit of an ambiguous term but I think all motorcycles feel smoother in the higher gears because the power is being used more evenly the higher the gear ratio. I didn't have a speedometer that measured kmph (US models are in mph) but that does seem a bit low. I'm assuming you're not over-reving the engine where valve float would limit performance. The motorcycle in a low gear like 1st or 2nd should literally keep accellerating until the valves float although the performance begins to decline before you go that far. Not recommended obviously.

Can't comment on your clutch except to say that if it is dragging even a little (i.e. that you can't really feel) when you're stopped it's going to wear out your clutch plate.

Alright Guys. The Bike is back from its first servicing and now the issue has been resolved. Dont know what was wrong but now its gone. Another question i have is that i have installed a custom made exhaust (slip-on). So do i have to change the stock air filter already? Ive got mixed opinions regarding this on the internet. Another thing is that if i change the Air filter, is it mandatory to install a fuel Management system or the likes?

You do not need to upgrade your air filter just because you changed the slip-on. If you do upgrade your air filter, then you need to have it tuned as soon as possible. Factories set every vehicles lean out the gate. Not to the point that it harms anything, but enough that once you upgrade your air intake you need more fuel to compensate for the increase in air intake. You take a bike that is already a small bit lean and add more air volume and it becomes even more lean, at this point it can begin to cause problems. Our ECM does not have the ability to self adjust so an aftermarket tune is required, whether it be a stage 1 from Harley or a V&H Fuel Pack that you have dialed in by a knowledgeable tuner with a dyno. I hope that made sense.

I occasionally notice the sluggish response when I have to go 25 mph. Then it will start chugging. I'll just speed up and then pull the clutch in and coast at that low of speed. I enjoy hearing the sound from my firebrand slip on exhaust as I gradually speed up during each gear shift. It kind of simulates the sound of a big V twin without having to crack the throttle. Speaking of throttle, it can be real touchy on my 750. Sometimes when I hit a rough part in the rode my throttle hand will flinch just a bit and the response is immediate on the bike. So I try to practice controlling the throttle without having radical changes do to hitting rough road surfaces. This is one of the reasons I'm working on putting a fatter grip like the ISO grip on my handle bar. I'm hoping that grip manufactures will start including the Street for their product soon.
